How Do You Ensure Assessment Precision?

A number of factors contribute to the degree of precision in large-scale assessments, including the quality of the individual assessment items, appropriate range of difficulty and coverage of curriculum learning objectives/expectations, accuracy and consistency of scoring (which I discussed in an earlier article), and statistical interrelationships among the items. All of these elements contribute to estimates of classification accuracy (estimates of the percentage of examinees who would be classified consistently using the same or alternate forms), which is of critical importance to an assessment program. How can education stakeholders have confidence in the results of large-scale assessment if classification accuracy is low? What steps are you taking to ensure assessment precision?

If you are not monitoring assessment precision, if you believe your program’s level of assessment precision needs improvement, or if you believe your assessment program may have quality assurance (QA) gaps, we can help. The Quality Assurance Lab, a collaboration of RMJ Assessment and Consultation MEP Consulting Inc., delivers a wide range of QA services. Knowledgeable and experienced in best practices, this team offers organizations/jurisdictions auditing services to assess the adequacy of existing processes and is skilled in the design, development, and implementation of any QA needs.
